About us

Bem-vindo, and muito obrigado for finding us!

Viva Procrastination is an independent film journal dedicated to celebrating Brazilian’s diverse cinema scene and helping anglophone cinephiles discover its finest movies.

Brazil has a rich cinematic history, but with limited exposure to it in English-speaking countries, only a handful of its films are well-known around the world. We want to help change that, by discussing the films we love and bringing new viewers to them, and in doing so, helping to build a more welcoming landscape in the northern hemisphere for Brazilian cinema.

Viva Procrastination was born of a growing love of, and scarcity of access to, Brazilian cinema. We started finding out about screenings at the Brazilian Embassy, trawling streaming platforms for movies and television and following Brazilian social media accounts in search of knowledge and happenings.

A wonderful Brazilian film screening collective in London – Cine Brazil – helped turbo-boost this journey of discovery. From a 2025 summer screening series at Kensal Rise’s Lexi Cinema came friendships with kindly Brazilian cinephiles, who helped demystify and contextualise some of the cinematic history and landscape, recommending essential films and offering introductions into the Brazilian film community.

Brazil’s leading lights are gathering awards, but distribution is scarce for less high-profile releases, and it’s still hard to track many films down, online or in limited cinema releases. Without the community of friendships with Brazilian film fans, the geographical access to screenings, or fluency in Portuguese, it can be hard to access much Brazilian cinema or find your way around it (Google Translate can only do so much).

We hope to help change this by nurturing British and English-speaking audiences and fostering connections within the Brazilian film scene, offering thoughtful context and engaging takes on all that Brazilian cinema has to offer. We’re here to offer conversation, community and inspiration – and to continue our own Brazilian learning curve, as we’re still at the start of our journey.

Explore our reviews and articles, follow us on Instagram to join the conversation… and look out for other plans we have in the works. Exciting times are ahead.

Gen Williams

Editor

Bom dia! I’m Gen Williams, editor of Viva Procrastination.

I’m a London-based writer and painter who fell hard for Brazilian cinema, and embarked on a deep dive into its treasures.

I’m a former music journalist who fell into the music industry by accident, starting out scribbling about live music and winding up working for major awards shows. I grew up in south London with culture-hungry parents who often took me to the BFI and the National Theatre (where my father worked for 30 years), kickstarting my love of cinema and performance.

I’m also a committed women’s football fan (my favourite players are Brazilian legends Formiga and Marta), and if I’m not at the cinema, you can find me on the terraces of my local independent football club, Dulwich Hamlet.
